Street Children's Day 2018

The Street Children's day was established by the Austrian charitable organization Jugend Eine Welt and is meant to work toward emergency relief, food, shelter, clothing, and education for “street children” and other homeless children.
All over the world, there are about 33 million kids and teens under age 18 who don't have a home and  around 100 million who spend most of their daily lives on the street without necessarily being homeless or without their parents – but still. The “street” has become their home. In this term "street" stands for abandoned buildings, vacant lots, freeway underpasses and anywhere else in the city that they can find temporary shelter.

But unfortunately for some of them this is not even the biggest problem. Moreover, they are also being chased by the police and people from the regulatory office.
These children are shouted at, chased away, pushed around, abused and sometimes even killed by the adults that should in fact care for them.
Their fear of adults and or officials may be well understood when remembering that in some cases these kids were forced to leave their homes and families due to child abuse. Of course, no one seeks his or her way into such a situation willingly. This for sure is also the trigger for the outbreak of mental diseases which will cause additional problems in their lives later on.
Other reasons why children became part of the so-called "street youth" may also include domestic, economic, or social disruption. In a lot of cases this means: political unrest, the breakdown of their homes or families, as well as cultural factors such as myths and the believe in the supernatural. In some parts of the world children are abandoned by their families just because it believes their child may or may not be in contact with the evil or the devil himself.

Sadly, the rights of these children are being disobeyed and ignored on a daily basis. In the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, almost every country of the world has agreed to ensure the rights of street children are being taken care of. Still 100 million of children are fighting for their lives in an unending battle of surviving on some of the most dangerous streets on planet earth.
Street children's Day is about youths taking actions in order to help others their age. In sharing this information with you we hope to motivate you to be creative and find ways to help people your age who need assistance.

World Cancer DAy

On the 4th of January it is World Cancer Day. A day that is important for everybody because cancer is a worldwide problem. Everybody can be affected and or has a family member that is affected. That`s why we should all pay attention to this specific disease

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. It can affect almost every part of your body. Cancer is one of the leading reasons for mortality worldwide. 2015 it was responsible for 8.8 million deaths. Even though everybody can be affected by cancer there are one out of three cases caused by specific risk factors. Those risk factors are high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Especially tobacco use is the reason for most deaths caused by cancer with a percentage of approximately 22%. Also a lot of chronic diseases like HPV have an impact on cancer.

30-50% of cases of cancer could be prevented. Most important is to avoid risk factors like tobacco use. Another prevention strategy is to vaccinate against HPV to protect yourself from sexually transmitted HPV. Furthermore protect yourself from ultraviolet radiation. Use sun cream and stay away from the sun in the middle of the day. Moreover the early detection of cancer is really important for the chance to cure it. Many cases of cancer have a good chance to be cured if they are detected early and are treated adequately. So go and get yourself checked regularly and especially if you have a specific suspicion.

Our guide for your data protection

Data Protection and Data Security
Data protection: Protection of the privacy of each individual's data. The right to self-determination and protection against misuse of data.

Data security: Protection of data, regardless of whether the data is personal and digital or analog. Protection from: Manipulation, loss or unauthorized access.

Main objectives of data security according to the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security)
Confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, authorization and availability.

Passwords
6 rules how to create a "good password"
  • 12 characters long, except for certain encryption methods. (WPA; WPA2; WPA2; WLAN)
  • Use at least four types of spellings
  • Avoid terms that might have originated in the dictionary
  • No common variants & repeat or keystroke patterns
  • No attempt to embellish simple passwords with special characters
  • Passwords with umlauts could not be entered abroad (Other keyboard constellations e. g. Ä; Ö; Ü; Ü -> not found in Italian keyboard)

You can visit  https://checkdeinpasswort.de/ to find out whether your password is safe to use or not, since the page will show you the according Password security details.

What should you consider when dealing with passwords?
  • Remember passwords instead of writing them down
  • Never store passwords unencrypted on PC or on notepad next to the screen or computer
  • If you simply cannot remember them then either write them on paper that you lock away and or in an encrypted file on the computer
  • Also Online management tools like keepass are useful

How to remember a good password?
  1. write a sentence
  2. Just take the first letters.
  3. Replace letters that are suitable with numbers and/or special characters
  • Make up your own sentence - no quotations

Change passwords regularly!
  • Change all passwords at regular intervals
  • There are programs that remind you of changing your password
  • Do not use unified passwords!
  • Do not use passwords for multiple accounts (If used more than once, the chance of being hacked is higher. In case of hacker attack: everything can be spied out)
  • Always change default passwords! (During the installation of the software product, often empty passwords or generally known passwords are preset -> are first tried by hackers to check if they have forgotten a private password.)
  • Protect screen saver with password! (It is possible to lock the keyboard and screen after a certain period of time without using the device. Unlocking: Only after entering the correct password. Otherwise: access by a third party.)

Do not give passwords to third parties or send them by e-mail!
E-mails are usually sent unencrypted. But:
Can be read on the way through the internet or can get lost
In this way your Password control may be lost!

Two Factors Authentication
Two Factors Authentication serves as proof of identity for a user by combining two different factors in order to enable him or her to log in somewhere or to carry out bank transfers.

Possible components of these two factors can be:
  • Knowledge (name, PIN, password)
  • Ownership (key, bank card)
  • Property (fingerprints, voice, iris recognition)

Disadvantages of this concept can be:
  • That the Token must be carried with you at all times
  • Theft, loss, forgetting
  • High acquisition cost/replacement purchase price

Ho to deal with these disadvantages ?
  • Ownership: Smartphone
  • Knowledge: Personal access license & once valid code (received via SMS, e-mail etc.)

This bears the following advantages:
  • No additional token required
  • Code will be replaced automatically after a certain time if not specified

Examples of the use of 2FA
  • Apple ID
  • Amazon Google
  • Sparkasse Cologne/Bonn
  • Facebook
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • paypal

Protecting Mobile Devices
5 ways to protect your mobile phone/tablet from hacking
  1. Password protection (password or fingerprint)
  2. No apps from unknown sources or jailbreak
  3. Do not surf questionable/virus-infected pages
  4. Antivirus software for Android
  5. Encryption of the mobile phone (iOS: By default by a PIN, Android: Edit Settings)

Aims of criminal attacks on mobile devices
  • Obtaining access data
    • Use data to transfer money from the victim's bank account to their own account  or to order goods and commodities for own use / to resell them and make money
  • hackers will be able to establish connections without the knowledge of the device owner due to a malicious app after installation
  • to replicate other malware/to send data such as personal information from the device to other servers
  • to transfers access data as well as private keys and certificates
  • to block the entire device and to encrypt personal data in the background and ask for ransom between 200 and 300 US dollars as blackmail

7 simple protective measures
  • always use passwords
  • use unusual combinations for your password and keep it hidden
  • update operating system regularly (Download updates & patches immediately)
  • Disable automatic function of apps in setting via data exchange/transmission
  • Secure W-LAN using a password
  • install a serious virus protection ( only load reliable guard software)
  • load only apps that are needed
  • disable loading of apps from unknown sources
  • only approve authorizations that require APPs for their purpose
  • do not forget to log out
  • control access to other APPs
  • do regular data backups
  • save important data externally (e. g. saving a cloud)

correct user behaviour
  • only click on serious sources
  • do not respond to notifications of external services
  • do not transmit sensitive data via public W-LAN
  • do not leave your equipment unattended

Holocaust Remembrance Day 27th January 2018

22/1/2018

Comments

On 27th January we remember the victims of Holocaust all around the world which was one of the biggest tragedies of the Second World War. In this period millions of innocent people suffered and died in concentration camps. The most of them, because of Jewish religion, but the Nazis also killed mentally and physically disabled people homosexual men and Romanian people. On 27th January 1945 Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the army and the air force of the Union of Soviet Socialists Republics, called Red Army. The first Holocaust Memorial Day was on 27th January in 2001 in the UK but nowadays people organize commemoration celebrations all around the world. The remembrance of the Holocaust is important because in this way the new generation gets information about history and we can avoid a new tragedy in the future.
The Greek Parliament legislated 27th January as a Remembrance Day for the Holocaust Victims and Heroes in 2004. On this day we remember the victims in schools and there are commemorative events all around Greek.

Introduction of Yavuz

Hi everyone!
It was a really fast decision to come to Greece and applying for this project. This Project is good for me because we have radio shows, broadcasts etc. Normally I’m not good in explaining my feelings but I must say that I really like Greece, especially Serres. Nice people, nice shops, nice culture. This is my first EVS-Project and I think this is more than a project. I have this idea because it has a lot of stuff for the people. I hope I can get new experience about radio shows. Actually this project improves my skills for being a tonemaster.
Normally we’re as Turkish people are similar to Greek people but of course we have differences. I think Greek people are really nice people and I want to get to know the Greek culture.
I think when my time is over, I will know knew characteristics from myself. Also new friends from different countries will give me new experiences. In fact I know a lot of people from different countries but it is always better to make more friends. Before I finish I must say that I have a nice hosting organisation and this month will pass by with nice people. See you after one month.

Goodbye MediArt!

The last morning on the couch.
I feel it has been years since I was living here with the youth all over the world, who became my Erasmus Greece family (as we called each other).
What have I learned?
I learned how to be selfless.
I learned how to show my love more.
I learned how to solve the problems.
I gained so much knowledge, skills and feelings that I could  write the list and lay here on the couch for hours on the last morning on the couch.
I am more or less packed to my luggage, thanks the minimalist lifestyle, which I know makes smiles now on lot of faces, and yes I’ve been living in Finland for a year. And I have to admit this goodbye is harder than that one was.
I touched by the people here, in Serres so much, and all the appreciation that I could give it wouldn’t be enough to express myself!
Our project, the MediaArt is great, we could do great things!
We learned how to cooperate with each other as volunteers and also how to support the people from the refugee camp.
Thanks for it, I have improved so much, and my worldview has changed.
It showed me, sometimes our problems, that we call problems (like should I buy the 10th T-shirts to my wardrobe or not), they are not as big as we thought so.
To the end I would like to just say thanks, thanks for the moments, the smiles, the hugs, the support, and for everything.
See you around the world, to make it better, and to challenge ourselves in the future as well, because we are open minded people, and we can do whatever we imagine!

My name is Ágnes, the new volunteer from Hungary. I applied for the MEDIART project because I could not find a job that I enjoy to do after I get my degree. The only thing what I know is that I really like music. I tried everything at my country. I wrote some arcticles to newspapers, I worked at a radio and moreover I was a volunteer at music festivals. Maybe this project will help me to find my way because I will have more time for myself. I can work with experts. I can figure out what I am the best at and I can work on it. This 9 months are an opportunity  for me because I can try myself out at every fields of the media.

ευτυχισμένο νέο έτος

In Germany we call the period between Christmas and New Year's Eve to be "between the years".
This saying was created, because the new year only began on the 6
th of January each year in former times and civilisations (This date goes back to Roman customs and shifts of the calendar).
Still,
since there had been a calendar reformation by pope Gregor the XIII, the official end of each year was supposed to be around the 24th of December. This caused some days to be between the end and the beginning of two different years.
In
1691 this issue was fixed by pope Innozenz the XII who announced the 31st of December to be the new official end of the year as a day of remembrance for the deceased pope Silvester the I in the catholic church.
The saying is still used in numerous countries of northern Europe
.

Europe is a nice keyword in this case, since you can definitely say that this year a lot of things have been happening between the year of 2017 and 2018. You can even say that this (mainly) 12 days long period of time has been a time of transition for the team of Praxis and Mediart.
It all started with the first of our volunteers starting their travels back to their home countries in order to celebrate the holiday together with their friends and families. Cristo was the first one who was on his way back. He was shortly followed by Killian and
Dóra, who themselves were followed by Julian, Vera and myself. While we tried to make the most out of our time at home, Maris was trying to do the same thing here, saying goodbye to her Greek friends, the project and Serres.

Each after one another we then started to return back to our apartment and the work in Serres. Dóra returned and together with Maris she celebrated New Year's Eve enjoying the Greek way of ending the year, while probably also preparing hers and Maris' journey back to their home countries at the end of their project.
This time arrived quite fast for the rest of us so that by the time the rest of us came back we already had to say our farewells and wishes to them, while directly starting anew since the first of Praxis' new
short-term volunteers had already arrived. With him, even though a few days later, also a new long-term volunteer joined-in our team so that now the former new ones are the old ones that are giving advices and explanations to others – who probably feel the same as we did when we arrived here for the first time.

In this case, the new year tru
ly started off completely different than the old one has ended. Still, we are all looking forward to it, the projects we will carry out and to the people who are yet to come to our group in the next months.
And even if the most of us were
struggling with something while being between the years - I'm talking: invalid ID's, Airport changes, luggage problems, strange people, missing cups and so on and so on – we managed to make it through everything and maybe even grew stronger doing so. Now having faced everything that had to happen to us, we can start working on this project with all the energy all these events have given us and we are going to try to make it as welcoming and inspiring to everyone who is new as we possibly can.

In this sense, the team of Praxis/Mediart wants to wish you all a happy new year and that you may fulfil your New Year's Resolutions.
