World Radio Day
One day a year to celebrate the Radio!

Picture
On 13th of February, we celebrated the World Radio Day in our radio station RODON FM in Serres, Greece. We, the Praxis Greece Team, made a huge Radio marathon to raise awareness about the role radio has and to bring people together on this remarkable day! We had visitors from Thessaloniki from Balkan Beats and kids of the elementary school in Serres had a look how Radio works.

But what is World Radio Day about? World Radio Day is about celebrating radio, why we love it and why we need it today more than ever. It is a day to remember the unique power of radio, to touch lives and to connect people from every part of the world.

The World Radio Day is annually held on 13th of February by the United Nations. This day is celebrated to promote the importance of the radio in communicating information worldwide. Radio is one of the most popular ways to exchange information, provide social interchange, and educate people all over the globe. The first World Radio Day was officially celebrated in 2012. This year the theme of World Radio Day was"Radio is You”, a call for greater participation of people and communities in the program and planning of radio broadcasting.

We decided to celebrate this special day as follows. In the morning of our radio marathon two school classes of the elementary school of Serres visited us in the radio station. After explaining how radio works and what radio is for, they interviewed two of our volunteers live on air. After an introduction about our program of the day, we had two broadcasts about worldwide facts about radio and the history of radio. Did you know that radio is over 100 years old, that Argentina is the country that listens the most to radio and that Norway turned off  FM radio and switched to DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting)?

During the whole marathon we had five volunteers from Radio Balkan Beats in Thessaloniki as visitors. They joined us by preparing broadcasts together with us, but they also had their own broadcasts about topics they wanted to talk about. The topic of the first broadcast from a French volunteer were aliens and how they could look like and besides about some scientific experiments. We also had a broadcast from an Italian volunteer who played music from all over the world and from different periods of time. What was on air 50 years ago from now?

A German volunteer talked about her book which was about modern philosophy and afterwards about emotions of songs and how they can affect us. Another Italian volunteer had a broadcast about etymology and interpretation of words, music and songs. And finally a broadcast about pirate radios at the end of a Portuguese volunteer from Thessaloniki.

During the whole radio marathon Rodon FM had collaboration with the Italian Radio Serra from our partner city Serra. We exchanged typical Greek and Italian songs and explanations what the songs were about and played them all along the day during the marathon.

All in all, it was a great and remarkable day with lots of fun and great memories. We are looking forward to the next World Radio Day next year on 13th of February!
