International Human Solidarity Day

Solidarity- I think (or better: I hope) everyone knows about it.
To promote the culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing a little bit more, the UN decided to celebrate the International Human Solidarity Day.

The principe of solidarity is easy- These who have more give to these who have less, it is about sharing and helping.

In the time of today, the time of globalization, it is maybe as important as never to strengthen the international solidarity. Otherwise it is impossible to grow equal and to reduce the poverty of today. Because of that we have establishments like the World Solidarity Fund. I think this is the right way, but in my opinion it is not enought to defeat poverty.

In my opinion, Solidarity is one of the most important things. It does not matter if you speak about the solidarity in a small group of persons or the international solidarity, there are so many ways to show solidarity in nearly every situation.

I think it is a really important character treatment to think about the situations of others, to help where you can, to share and to make the world through solidarity a little bit better.

The gap between rich and poor is way to big in the world of today. If the princip of solidarity would work a little bit better, the poverty in the world could be reduced, or at least improved.

What's about you- did you show solidarity today? If yes: Perfect! If no, it could maybe be your goal for the day!

The Arabic language

18/12/2018

Picture
Because of the Arabic language day, which officially got introduced on 2010, the question on the reasons of this celebration arrises. First of all the celebration is every year on 18th of December as a remarkable symbol, because it was the day when in 1973 the "General Assembly approved Arabic as an official UN Language”. The main goal of this celebration is to promote cultural diversity, to show the history and richness of the Arabic language.
About the language I can tell you that it is spoken by more than 422 million people, who are most of all spread in the arab world. Most of the speakers are muslims, because the Quran their sacred book is only written in arabic. In the middle ages the language was the common one in politics, science and literature and it helped also to spread out new knowledges.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness among United Nations. Cultural activities in order to celebrate this day include: Music Bands, literary readings, competitive competitions, exhibitions, lectures, artistic performances, play and popularity. It also includes the processing of meals for the cultural diversity of language-speaking countries, the creation of film shows and brief seminars for those who wish to explore more.

International Universial health coverage day

What are you doing when you have a very bad disease?
Or a simple cold?
Or you just want to check if everything is alright?
You are going to the doctor, aren't you?
At least you should have the opportunity to do this.
But sadly most of the perons on this earth do not have financial security when it comes to health coverage.
That means that you have to pay alot of money by yourself.
The poeple who suffer most under the current system are poor and destitute but those are actually the ones who are in need of the most health supply because of the enviroment they life in.
100 million people are getting poor per year because they had to pay for health cost which they really need.
But not only people who live in developing countries suffer under non existing health coverage, also in industrial countries exist a lot of problems with health coverage.
For example in the USA, they are a lot of perons who struggle to get insulinn
To raise awarness of those problems the UN proclaimed 2017 the 12th of December as the International Universal Health Coverage Day.
The theme of the second International Universal Health Coverage Day is „Unite for Universal Health Coverage : Now is the Time for Collective Action“.
To archive more and faster solutions in this problem the UN desided to hold next year a UN high-leve meeting during the 2019 UN General Assembly about the topic universal health coverage.
I
personally think it is very important to give good and free health coverage to everyone and everywhere as fast as possible.
Today the medical archievments are higher then they have been ever before. So in my oppinion it is only logically to offer those archievments to everybody and help a lot of people.

International Mountain Day

Did you ever thought about the importance of mountains?

They cover a lot of the worlds surface, around 22 percent, and almost one billion people live in mountain areas.

But that is not all mountains can offer, even when you do not live in the mountains, they are really important for everyone, for example because of the water or the food. 60-80 percent of the world's freshwater is provided by mountains and a lot of important food crops originate in mountains, among them potatoes, maize, apples or tomatoes.

Another factor is the tourism, mountains attrack 15-20 percent of global tourism. A lot of peolpe like the mountains because of the opportunety to do many different things, for example climbing, hiking or wintersports.

The biodiversity has also to be mentioned as one really important factor of mountains, half of the world's biodiversity hotspots are concentrated in mountains and they host 28 percent of earth's forests.

As you can see, mountains play a big role in the everyday life of nearly everyone, even when you can't see it at first glance. More than half of the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy.

So far so good, but mountains are under the threat from climat change. They are one of the earliest indicators of climat change, for example when mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates because of the rising temperatures, as how it is happening at the moment. The consequences of this problem are really big, for example when the melting glaciers affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people.

A lot of people never think about the impact of mountains, even though they are mentioned in the 2030 Agenda, they are still often forgotten, and that is something we have to change!

We all, politicians and everyone else, have to keep the importance of mountains and the environment in general in our mind, because we have just this one world.

To end this article: #MountainMatter. For water, food, environment, biodiversity and many other things. Not only for mountain communities but also for the rest of the world. Keep that in your mind. And not to forget: enjoy the nature and the mountains as often as you have the chance to!

iNTERNATIONAL DAY OF COMMEMORATION AND DIGNITY OF THE VICTIMS OF THE CRIME OF GENOCIDE AND OF THE PREVENTION OF THIS CRIME

10/12/2018

Comments

On 9th of December 1948 , 70 years ago the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The Genocide Convention is in force since 1951. In this convention genocide is defined in legal terms which means that any intent to destroy, in whole or in part a national, ethnical, racial or religious group is punished and illegal.
The convention was adopted after the campaign of lawyer Raphael Lemkin and also the text of the convention was mostly written by him.
Raphael Lamkin was a Polish-Jewish lawyer and peace researcher born in 1900. He started to work at the Genocide Convention after the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust during which he almost lost his whole family.
To raise awareness of genocide in general and in particular about the genocide convention and to remember and honor the victims of genocide there is since 2015 on the 9th of December the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime.
I personally think that this topic is very important and everybody should be educated about it. When I was 16 years old I went with my school to Auschwitz, the biggest concentration camp of the Nazis. In Auschwitz there were 1,1 million people murdered and when you are standing there, I think you can feel this.
And you start to think about this topic. Not only about genocide but also about discrimination and the “reasons” for genocide. I put reasons in quotation marks because they are no reasons for genocide.
As a 16 year old girl, this visit of Auschwitz really changed me and my personal view on life.
i think a visit like this should be obligatory for everyone.
It is the responsibility of each person to not let a genocide happen again.
I want to end this article with a quote of Ellie Wiesel, which is very fitting in my opinion.
Ellie Wiesel was a Romanian American Jewish writer, professor, political activist and Nobel Laureate. He survived the holocaust and his work is mostly about his experience as a prisoner in Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

“At the time of the liberation of the camps, I remember, we were convinced that after Auschwitz there would be no more wars, no more racism, no more hatred, no more anti-Semitism. We were wrong. This produced a feeling close to despair. For if Auschwitz could not cure mankind of racism, was there any chance of success ever? The fact is, the world has learned nothing. Otherwise, how is one to comprehend the atrocities committed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia…” Ellie Wiesel

The human bird shall take his first flight, filling the world with amazement, all writings with his fame, and bringing eternal glory to the nest whence he sprang.
- Leonardo da Vinci

In 2018 we can look back on a history of about 100 Years in civil aviation. 100 years of awe, development and innovation. In these 100 years humanity grew together like never before.
Since 1944, on the 7. of December, the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) celebrates the International Civil Aviation Day.
A day to celebrate the innovation and its importance for Humanity. But also a day to turn our heads forward, to those who have been yet left out, who don't reap the socioeconomic benefits coinciding with international aviation because it's seeds where sown out unequal.
Every five years, the ICAO chooses a special anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day. Between these anniversary years, a single theme for the four years in between is chosen.
The theme for the current four year period is: Working Together to Ensure No Country is Left Behind.

"TOGETHER ON REFUGEES HIGHWAY"

During the last week, Johanna and I were in Thessaloniki to join the seminar „Together on refugees highway“, a workshop from Erasmus+ about the work with Refugees and Youth.

Our work started even before the seminar with organising stuff, so we knew a lot about the participant, for example their application and their arrival and departure, when their planes will start and how much the flight costs. But these were just theoretical informations, not filled with the personality of each participant. When we arrived, it was at first a little bit strange- is that the boy who wanted a room for his own? Is that the girl who can not eat gluten? But during the week, the pictures that we had of the persons before the seminar changed very fast.

The week started on monday with a „getting to know each other“ section. We learned the names and the eye colors of each other and had a lot of fun together. When we went out for lunch, they weren't strangers anymore.

After the following introduction, the seminar started. We learned a lot about many different topics and had workshps about migration, integration and Erasmus+ , to name just some examples, and the participants had also time to share their own experiences and learn from each other.

Between the theoretical things, there was also some time to discover the city. We made an interesting bustour trought Tessaloniki (ok, I could't see that much because there was an advertisement on the window next to me and the curves were a little bit too much for my stomach) but it was really nice to see something of the really beautiful city.

I think the food has also to be mentioned as one of the highlites of the week... We went to a restaurant twice a day, for lunch and for dinner, and especially the dinner was every evening really good. Back in Serres, I really miss the luxury to have nice meals twice a day without cooking... Not just because of the food (what was really great) but also because of the conversations with the others, the meals were excellent. From day to day we knew each other better and better, and the conversations on our vegeterian table were always really good.

The best evening was in my opinion the last one, when we went all together to a bar after dinner. During the evening, the bar turned into a club, everyone was singing and dancing and we had a lot of fun. But on the other hand it was also very emotional, because we had to say goodby to each other.

The last section of the seminar was about the final evaluation and every person had the chance to say something to the others while we were sitting in a circle of chairs. Some cried (included me), and I really didn't expected that at all! It is a little bit strange how the farewell of people that you know just for about a week can be so emotional.

All in all I am really thankfull for the experiences I gained during the week and for all the wonderful people that I could meet. I hope I can see them again as soon as possible!

a world without volunteers

5/12/2018

Have you ever thought about a world without Volunteers? A world in where would not be people who spend time and energy for helping other human beings without receiving wages, just because they want to help out. The values volunteers spread all over the world by doing there work are influencing the behavior of many people. Currently more than one billion people volunteer globally of which 70 per cent working informally directly to help people in their local community.

Me, I am also a volunteer here at Praxis Greece. But what exactly does that mean for me and for the people around me?
Generally volunteers have the role of a responsibility person, especially when you are volunteering in a different country abroad. You take the responsibility of representing your country your culture and you represent specific values that stand for being a volunteer. It starts by accepting people whatever they look like, accepting that every individual on our planet is different and ends by taking responsibility for your own actions.
That’s why volunteers often be called ambassadors, because these are things that an ambassador should embody. In my opinion it is true that volunteers are kind of ambassadors, but they are also so much more. I think that it is really important to support and promote volunteering in every of its aspects. It guarantees that we do not lose our humanity and the values that made us strong. In a world that is increasingly dominated by economy and policy, values like acceptance, friendship and cooperation getting more and more important.

The International Volunteer Day reminds us of these values as much as it honors all the millions of volunteers, that help out every day to make the world a better place.
So think about the question of the beginning again and you will notice that the world would be a different one without volunteers.

World soil day

5/12/2018

We take many things for granted, food for example and also the soil it's grown on, but what happens if the soil we grow our food on becomes unusable? What happens if the soil turns infertile through reckless agriculture or Environmental changes?
The thought of this happening is pretty dire but the harsh truth is that a lot of arable soil is already gone due to poor treatment and exploitation and the percentage will continue to rise.
This brings a lot of problems to the local communities witch rely on that land.
Soil pollution leads to lower yield rates and lower quality of the food grown witch ten leads to hunger and famine.
But not only the soil we grow our produce on is threatened, also many ecosystems and their are facing major threats from agriculture, pollution and climate-change.
One example for that is the continued destruction of rain forests all around the world to make room for more agriculture, witch then uses the soil for a while to get insanely high yields, much more than it can handle and in return turning it into barren wasteland completely devoid of life.
To protect all the fertile soil all around the world, the united nations declared in 2013 that the 5. of December is The World Soil Day.
This year the World Soil Day is focusing on raising awareness to stop soil pollution.
