International Translation Day

30/9/2019

Today, 30th September is the feast of St. Jerome, a Bible translator, who is considered the patron saint of translators. He translated most of the Bible from Greek manuscripts into Latin. Therefore, it is also celebrated as an International Translation Day since 2017 to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries. Even though it is the era of Google Translate, this profession is becoming increasingly important in the era of progressing globalization.

The work of language professional plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security. It is important to understand what other people are trying to say, oftentimes, the context lies between the words, and Google Translate is not able enough to distinguish between small intricacies of different languages. Or languages that have a very complicated grammar structure, so different to English language, for example, Finno-Ugric languages that are built on inflections instead of prepositions and articles. Miscommunication and misunderstanding have brought so many problems into our lives. Truly, even when people are speaking the same language, often it is easy to misunderstand the other.

I am an English graduate whose mother tongue is Estonian. While I do not have a lot of professional experience in the field of translations, it is something I enjoy doing and hope to one day have a career in. Words, expressions and different grammar structures of languages are very interesting and show how differently they impact the minds of different language speakers. Estonian is a fairly small language and while most people can speak English well, the need for Estonian interpretation might grow in order to preserve the language.

I invite everyone to be more mindful of their own language, of the ways they express themselves, which lingo they use, and to pay attention to various ways in which the different words and languages change the way we see the objects, the ideas and the world.

the european mobility week - my first political campaign

From the 16th until the 22nd of September we had the "European Mobility Weak“. As Serres  participated at this event of the EU, Praxis organised some events and activities. The goal of the mobility week is to promote walking and riding the bike as a sustainable alternative to the car. Not only would the traffic benefit from less cars but the whole character of the city would change for the better, as there would be less noise, better air and more space.
On Monday, the first day of the mobility week we made a broadcast on Rodon FM where we introduced and promoted the mobility week to the citizens and discussed the diverse advantages of sustainable traffic.Wednesday, we organised an "orienteering“ event with the help of Vasilis, who introduced us to this modern sport more closely. The basic form of orienteering is like running but you have to find the fastest way on your own with the help of a map and a compass only. It was a very exciting experience. These were only two out of the six activities we organised with Elisa as the head of the event.
For me personally, it was the first bigger event since I arrived in Serres. It was a lot of fun and I learned many new things about how to promote a political event. I am looking forward to the next one!

We participated in the compaign about the mobility week last week, it was… really good!
Firstable, we went to the radio to speak about the mobility week, about climate change, about the world we are creating in general… it was fantactic because it was the first day we were all the volunteers together!
Then, on Wednesday we had orienteering. What a difficult proof! I have never practiced this sport before, so it was so hard to me! But I love sports so the activity was so nice, also, in our team was Nikos, a local who come to our organization a lot of days to learn Spanish, so I am really pleasure he was in my team, he was so helpful.
On thrusday we had a very good activity on the streets in Serres. Personally, I couldn´t participate too much because I had lessons in Praxis, but the time I was there, my partners did a very good job! Many people participated in the activity and they enjoyed so much. Now we have a really good poster that local people and volunteers made!
Also, all of Praxis volunteers recorded a selfie video asking about Mobility Week. All my family in Spain use the bike every day to move around our village, so they helped me a lot and they recorded a video using the bicycle. I recorder also mine and I put all together. We are a sportive family and I wanted you know it!

Ecological footprint

27/9/2019

In the present, one of the most important environmental problems that cities have is air pollution, whose origin is mostly made by emissions from an unsustainable transport that is mainly based on the use of the car. These emissions, besides of increasing pollution levels in cities, are responsible for climate change.

We must understand that environmental problems are up to date. There are more and more cars, even more than two cars per family. We must also be aware that when we reduce the use of vehicles, we contribute to our health.
It has been an intense week of citizen awareness activities so that they understand the importance of caring for the environment and the footprint we leave in our world.
But, do we know what the ecological footprint is? The ecological footprint is what allows us to evaluate the impact that a specific activity has on our environment, being compared with the capacity of the environment and thus be able to define whether an activity is sustainable or not.

Let's fight for a sustainable ecological footprint!

Sustainable mobility?

27/9/2019

For most of us more an abstract expression than a principal to follow. From the 16th to 22nd of September our team of PRAXIS gave this abstract expression an image. Under the motto #Walkwithus all of our European volunteers have participated in the Sustainable mobility week, in which we organized several events to raise awareness for this topic.

Why this topic is so important and underestimated ? Here are some facts: more than 30 % of the Co2 emissions produced in America are caused by cars. The emission of Co2 and greenhouse gases pollute our air, destroy our surrounding and nature. We have September and we have yet reached the world`s overshoot day. Our confirmed habit to fly and drive the car risks the planets existence for future generations. Since we live in the century of the extinction of species, the melting of the pole caps and climate change we have the duty to question our habits and change our behaviour for the better. We can proudly state that we have presented a good example last week how individuals can contribute something to the curing of our environment. During the week we produced selfie videos, told the stories of the bikes of our refugees, joined an orienteering run, organized an information spot, produced a quiz and a podcast for people to inform themselves. The highlight of our week was the car free Sunday we advised people to question their way of transport and consider changing it in a sustainable way.

Follow our example and join the movement of sustainable mobility. All these activities are just an example of what you can do to benefit your city, yourself and the environment.
Change for the better to save our planet. Walk with us.dit.

praxis and mobility week

From 16th to 22nd of September, Praxis and the volunteers in there, participated in the European Mobility Week. The volunteers tried to offer Serres citizens alternatives of using a car. All of us made organized several activities like Radio Spots in RODON FM, broadcasts, InfoPoint in which the citizens had to sign the mural with their footprint, cartels, Social Media promotion, selfie videos telling what we do to avoid the pollution or to contribute with the Mobility Week and also pictures of some refugees with the bikes that Praxis lend them to come to our language lessons at the Office.

From my point of view, all of us made a big effort to make this campaign successful. We also had fun between us at the same time we were adding, in some way, “health” to our planet. Personally, I walked every day to the Office, what made my “free car action”. And made me feel so good with my body. I was so happy knowing that everything we were making was for the planet.

We promoted it during the whole week and the campaign had a high impact on Serres citizens. What made us feel satisfaction. All together can do bigger actions. People are not aware at all of the tragic situation that the planet is suffering and we really need to raise awarness about it. It’s really important that all of us, individually and as a group, make as many good actions as we can everyday. It’s our planet, where we live, the one that allows us to develope. We need the nature and all the things that it gives us to survive. If we don’t take care of it, in some moment, we will destroy it and if this happened we all would suffer the consequences.

Be one of us and walk with us!
Save our planet.

smart mobility

A new exciting event took place in Serres this September. Praxis participated in  The European Mobility Week which was held from the 16th to the 22nd of the month in the city. Its purpose was to give the citizens of Serres some ideas about how to move around using the public means of transport or the bike instead of the car, helping this way the environment.
Me and other volunteers from different parts of Europe helped Praxis to carry out this campaign. Each of us contributed a small bit. We moved in public transport. We promoted the movement by bicycle. Some of us stopped using the car and went for a walk. We participated in orientation events with local people of Serres and raised their awareness from the youngest  to the oldest, with the sole purpose of improving the  existing situation.
The sustainable mobility is of great importance. The environment is in trouble. Which means that the world is in trouble. We  do not have a planet B. So, we need to take care of OUR  planet.
Join us to fight together for a new sustainable way of life.

Mobility week in serres

From the 16th to the 22nd of September Praxis took part of the European Mobility Week, a week in which we promoted clean mobility and sustainable urban transports in Serres, in order to increase the possibility to save our planet.

During this week, we organized different events to make people aware about the advantage of more sustainable urban transport and, in general, about the environmental issue, that is one of the most important challenges that we are facing. We promoted this event on Praxis social media to engage more young people and to tell them to join us in this challenge. Also, we had the opportunity to join a group of young people for the global strike against climate change, that took place last Friday. In fact, the mobility week was an opportunity for us to bring up the major issue of climate change. If we start to think differently and use sustainable transport for our everyday needs like bike, car sharing, and bus, instead of cars, we will have a chance to fight climate change. As we already know, climate studies scientifically demonstrate significant increases of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, that increase the greenhouse effect and consequently the temperature of the entire planet. The climate change is happening for real, and now we can see this: every day tons of forests are burning, the sea level and the temperature is rising. Politics must take serious action.

Now we have the possibility to change political agenda and bring this issue to the ones that have the power to take actions. For this reason, we must stand up together and take part in the global events and change our bad habits.
